If you are a professional going for treatment, STAY AWAY. I've been sober since 2013, receiving treatment, 45 days at Next Step and 45 at the Professional Enhancement Program (PEP). I initially went in for substance abuse. If you go in for substances, there's a good chance you'll end up at PEP. I went back to PEP every 6 months for 4 years. As time went on the treatment took an ominous turn. I was mis-diagnosed. Polygraph questions, poorly worded, were used for confirmation. It was horrible. I saw one of my treatment reports and was shocked. It painted an inaccurate picture that threatened my livelihood. I got reevaluated and transferred. Make no mistake, I needed change. Though initially helpful, the bad soon outweighed the good. The therapy at PEP is high on anxious distress and low on support. They are too stringent. I have a friend who talked to the head of our medical board twice to have PEP's restrictions eased; both times she agreed. He left the program. There are 4 people who went there in my support group. Three of us transferred. Going for rechecks is worse than a tooth extraction. Instead of Monday through Friday it's Thursday through Wednesday. You stay for a weekend despite no clinical activity. I often returned home worse than when I left. With a jumbled mind, I would, embarrassingly, express deep and heartfelt gratitude. It's...difficult to explain. Pine Grove has a sex addiction unit. They over estimate the prevalence, lacking valid epidemiology. Data on treatment effectiveness is also lacking. Perhaps because sexual compulsion issues probably aren't an "addiction". The American Psychological Association doesn't support the diagnosis and it's not in the DSM-5. They are undeterred, however. If suspicious they will fish for it with polygraph. Thought is seen as behavior thus may be monitored. It's not good; it's pseudoscience. When combined with polygraph it is especially dangerous. One day, if not already, someone will get pushed too far. Next Step is substance rehab. for men. It's easy, just not very effective. They address mood and anxiety disorders with medication. They do not offer buprenorphine, naltrexone, baclofen or any other risk reduction medication. The model is based on social support and supernatural intervention. They do not keep relapse statistics. Despite definitive data showing improved outcome with opiate replacement therapy or monthly naltrexone injections, Pine Grove ignores those options. Opiate addicts, without replacement therapy, have a 60% relapse rate the FIRST WEEK after discharge. Replacement medication decreases all cause mortality by 50%. Forrest General Hospital is allowing Pine Grove to watch preventable relapses and overdoses. Their stance is in opposition to recommendations by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration (SAMSA) and multiple other professional organizations. (See POATS study by Weiss, 2011). I go to SMART recovery which is not based on the 12 steps. Other options were not discussed at Next Step or PEP. They make it seem the 12 steps are the only answer; a big problem for those with a non theistic world view. Therapists at PEP lack intellectual integrity, embracing the dubious science of sex addiction, ignoring the valid science of chemical addiction. They are true believers, equipped with polygraph and controlling your career. What can go wrong? I changed to an organization called Acumen in Kansas; it's made all the difference. I'm more relaxed and optimistic. If it's substance abuse you will get 90 days (Acumen doesn't do 90 day substance rehab.). I know several people who went to Talbot in Atlanta-no complaints; Palmetto in Louisiana is an option. I have heard good things about Bradford in Alabama. Bradford and Talbot utilize IM Naltrexone for opiate dependence, I'm not sure about Palmetto. Good luck, hang in there.

  • Caring and compassionate people who truly want to see people live their best life. They understand how vulnerable you feel and how frightening it can be, and every staff member I met from the janitorial services to the doctors were friendly and kind. They also emphasize total body wellness and provide stable psych patients plenty of time outside. There are fountains and walking trails. It's a beautiful campus and I had a great experience there. A small matter, but the food is also very good. Ms. Dimples, Ms. Dorinda, and so many others I can't name right right now. A topnotch facility filled with devoted and caring professionals.
